I have been on a mission to get my house in order over the last month or so after coming across a wonderful, little book, “the life-changing magic of tidying up” by Marie Kondo. I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to get their home in order.
The book came along at the right time for me and even though I had no plans for tackling such a huge project, I have been driven, almost obsessively, to declutter and clean every room in my house. I have been amazed at the amount of material items I have removed. I have a small house and always have a bag on hand to fill that I take to Goodwill, but I have still discarded several bags and boxes worth of stuff that is just no longer relevant in my life.
After spending time in my home, really looking at the possessions I own, and asking myself whether they bring me joy, I can say that my house now makes me happy. When I look around, I see clean lines without clutter. I see organization and light, airy spaces, even in my small house.
As we move into this holiday and winter season, this might be the right time for you, also, to get your home in order. Maybe you only have time to spend on one drawer, or one closet, but the sooner you make the effort to begin owning your possessions instead of them owning you, the happier you will find yourself in all areas of your life.
You will find you have time for other things because your house won’t need your constant attention. You may also find a forgotten joy and lift in your heart because the stress of cluttered spaces weighs heavily on your mind, even when you aren’t home.
Have a great day!
